Actor Samuel Johnson breaks world record by unicycling around Australia for Breast Cancer.
When news broke that Samuel Johnson was crossing the finishing line at Federation Square here in Melbourne, our very own Sage angels ‘flew’ in to treat him to a well-deserved massage!
And it wasn’t just the team at Sage making an appearance; Meshel & Tommy from Nova 100 were there along with a crowd of thousands.
Everyone enthusiastically showing their gratitude towards Samuel for breaking a Guinness World Record, all in the name of Breast Cancer Awareness, which raised in excess of $1.4 million!
So how did actor Samuel Johnson, Breast Cancer, massage students from Sage Institute of Massage, an epic Aussie adventure resulting in a world record title, and one unicycle all get into the same picture?
Johnson is best known as Evan Wilde from tele-series The Secret Life of Us, as well as Crackerjack, Underbelly II and Network 10’s Rush. He is the voice of Pedigree, Vodafone and Suzuki. He’s been an AFI award winner, nominee for multiple Logies and has an Australian Centenary medal in the 2000 Queen’s Honours List.
What’s less known is that he has a sister, Connie, aged 35, a mother of two and who is dying of cancer. She has fought cancer three times in her life, but this time it’s terminal. Faced with the fight of her life, she set her brother the craziest, toughest task she could think of. It was a joke at first, then Samuel made it a promise. It went along the lines of these:
1. Raise $1 million for Breast Cancer research
2. Raise awareness of the disease that’s killing her
3. Break the Guinness World Record for the longest journey on a unicycle.
“Samuel has consulted all the experts, taken none of their advice and is setting off on the challenge of a lifetime. He made a promise and is determined to keep it!”
Samuel set out on the longest journey ever on a unicycle almost exactly a year ago, covering 15,955km over 364 days, while raising an epic amount of money along the way to spread Connie’s message of Breast Cancer awareness.
On Thursday, 13th of February, he ended his journey, reuniting with his sister in front of a massive crowd at Federation Square in Melbourne. Both media and fan support has been overwhelming, with a host of Aussie celebrities such as Noni Hazelhurst, Claudia Karvan, Adam Hill, Amanda Keller, Guy Pearce, Jessica Marrais, Sigrid Thornton and Pia Miranda all weighing in with online videos of support. Love Your Sister’s Facebook page currently has over 166,000 fans and nearly 221,000 people talking about the event online.
Our students at Sage Institute of Massage were absolutely thrilled at the thought of offering their services to Samuel at the epic finale, busily getting to work on the day as they revived his weary bones! On behalf of all the team at Sage we thoroughly congratulate you, Mr Johnson; our thoughts are with you and your treasured sibling Connie. You have increased our awareness of Breast Cancer, along with the importance of early detection – and have clearly shown us that you, Samuel Johnson, most definitely Love Your Sister.
Sage Institute of Massage – it’s more than a job, it’s a rewarding career.
