Meet the team: Joshua Wood – Trainer, Sage Institute of Massage

Joshua Wood - Trainer - Sage Institute of MassageIn this blog, we meet Sage graduate and now trainer at Sage Institute of Massage, Josh Wood. Josh has a strong sporting background and has managed to combine his passion for Mixed Martial Arts (MMA) with his work. Let’s see how Josh has managed to do what many of us only dream of doing!

I came to massage in a round-about way. I moved to Australia in 2008 from the U.S. I have had a long history with Mixed Martial Arts (MMA) and have been training in MMA and various combat sports for nearly a decade. At the same time as moving to Australia, I was searching for a way to turn my passion for the body into a career. Enter, manual therapies!

Find your passion: Josh in the ring

I originally wanted to become an acupuncturist, but as an international student, some options were not available to me. This is when I found Sage. I decided to study massage as a pathway towards my goal to learn how to fix bodies, instead of break them! Sage was the first training organisation to respond to my enquiries and offered the most affordable and reputable course.

After completing my course I spent a year working full-time in massage at a personal training gym, where I worked on the gym-goers, amateur athletes, all the way up to Olympians. I have been running my massage business ‘Trigger Point Assassin’ for the last six-years.

In The Gym

One day, about five and a half years ago, I received a call from one of my massage trainers offering me a position as a trainer here at Sage. The rest, as they say, is history. I have been working here since. In this time I have also been studying full time (completing my Bachelor of Health Science), racking up my amateur fight record, and working as a personal trainer and boxing coach in Elsternwick.

If I were to offer any advice to future, and current students, it would be this: find your passion first, then figure out how to make your passion pay you!
