Meet Bernadette Wilson, Trainer – Sage Institute of Massage

bernadette wilson - Sage institute of MassageBernadette Wilson has had a long and varied career as a massage therapist in different settings, and now shares her knowledge and experience with Sage Institute of Massage students. Bernadette gives us some insight into her world and some ‘sage’ advice below.

How long have you been working with Sage?
Over 6 years. I started with the Australian Institute of Massage, so I have been with Sage from its inception, when there were only 2 classrooms!

What is your background?
I have over 14 years industry experience as a Remedial Massage Therapist. This has included working in private practice, hospital settings, multi-disciplinary practice and sporting clubs.

I am also a specialist Lymphatic Drainage Massage Practitioner.

What made you become a trainer?
I believe that knowledge should be shared. I have been educating clients for over 14 years– it is a natural progression to share knowledge with up and coming therapists.

What do you like most about your role?
The enthusiasm of students. It’s great when concepts are understood and then applied. Also, working with a group of trainers with a collective experience of over 60 years!

What do you do in a week at Sage Institute of Massage?
My role is a trainer, so my week consists of spending time in class.

What do you think are the personal qualities that make a terrific masseur?
For me a massage therapist needs to treat with purpose and to remember that it is a privilege to be involved in the health and well-being of your client.

Learning anatomy can seem a little daunting at first. Do you have any tips for prospective students who want to learn?
Drawing muscles, either on flash cards or if you are lucky enough, on a friend who is happy to be a canvas! Visualising is one way to make it fun and help to embed the information.

Melbourne is swept up in football fever, yet again! Spill the beans – who’s your favourite team?

How do you relax?
A good long walk does wonders.

Sage Institute of Massage – it’s more than a job, it’s a rewarding career.
